Fluorite (fluorspar, CaF₂) is the feedstock of fluorine chemistry. Its use depends on grade.
| Type | Grade | Main uses |
|---|---|---|
| Acid grade | CaF₂ ≥ 97% | Hydrofluoric acid → refrigerants, fluoropolymers, battery electrolyte (LiPF₆), semiconductor etchants |
| Metallurgical grade | CaF₂ about 65–90% | Flux in iron and steel making |
China is the world's largest producer and consumer of fluorite, with mines in Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Inner Mongolia and Hunan. As domestic fluorochemical demand has grown, imports from Mongolia and elsewhere have risen. Several countries classify fluorspar as a strategic or critical mineral.
