Benzene is the main aromatic building block, used almost entirely to make other chemicals:
Styrene (SM) → PS and ABS resins
Phenol → bisphenol A and polycarbonate
Caprolactam → nylon
Aniline → MDI for polyurethane
China's market
China is the world's largest benzene consumer. It uses petroleum benzene from refineries and crackers alongside benzene refined from coke-oven by-products, and imports the shortfall — South Korea is one of China's main benzene suppliers. Port inventories in East China are a key price signal.
